Gal Shmuel wins the prestigious ERC CoG grant for developing metamaterials in elastodynamics

Gal Shmuel has won the 2021 ERC CoG 2021 grant for the project EXCEPTIONAL, whose goal is developing novel metamaterials: engineered materials exhibiting properties not found in natural materials. The focus is on dynamic metamaterials, aimed at controlling elastic and acoustic waves. The proposed approach will transfer and integrate notions from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics into continuum mechanics. In doing so, this project will address fundamental questions that emerged with the advent of non-Hermitian physics.

The European Commission for Research (ERC) mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding for investigator-driven frontier research, on the basis of scientific excellence. The ERC consolidator grants (CoG) are intended to support pioneering ideas of researchers who have already shown the ability to conduct creative, ground-breaking research.
